Installation

2. Installation — Installing Hermes on the Server

Chapter 1 covered the infrastructure (VPS, user, network, backups); this chapter is where Hermes actually lands on that server and gets running. There are two paths — the direct install script or Docker — and as noted in chapter 1, you should commit to one path up front, not mix them halfway.

The four stages of a complete install

  1. Install Hermes and configure the initial model (2.1 or 2.3, depending on the path you chose) — get Hermes onto the machine and make it ready to use.
  2. Make sure the environment is right (2.2) — the Python, Node, and system dependencies that both paths need underneath.
  3. Verify (2.4) — run hermes doctor before trusting that anything works.
  4. Turn it into a long-lived background service (2.6) — so Hermes does not depend on an open terminal session.

And because this is not a once-and-forget task, 2.5 (Updates) closes the lifecycle — the upgrade procedure differs depending on the path you chose in step 1.
