Gateway takes priority when both are available

If the Tool Gateway is available and the tool is set to use_gateway: true, Hermes prefers the gateway even if you also have a direct API key — this affects billing: calls through the gateway are deducted from your Portal subscription, not from your separate API key balance. Keep this in mind when tracking costs across the two sources.

Notes

• You do not need your own FAL account if you already have Nous Portal — enable the gateway and it works immediately, in keeping with the Tool Gateway’s “no extra account” spirit.
• For consistent style needs (blog illustrations, chapter 16.5), pin a specific model instead of letting the default change — different FAL models produce clearly distinct image styles.
• Run hermes portal info at any time to confirm whether image generation is routing through the gateway or your own key, to avoid confusion when debugging invoices.
